canting or tjanting?
The Van Ophuijsen Spelling System was used as the orthography for the Malay language from 1901 to 1947 in the Dutch East Indies. Before the Van Ophuijsen Spelling System was in force, the Malay language in the Dutch East Indies did not have a standardised Roman spelling, and was written in the Jawi script.
The Malay language was generally understood by the maritime population of the Archipelago, where it formed the "Lingua Franca", or the language of commerce. The word canting ꦕꦤ꧀ꦛꦶꦁ itself originated from Javanese and was absorbed into the Malay language.
In 1947, in the newly formed Republic of Indonesia, the Van Ophuijsen Spelling System was replaced by the Republican Spelling System, and the spelling is now canting.
